I watched a hour long special about it this evening on KCTV5, Catastrophe on the Skywalks: 30 Years after the Fall. Such a awful tragedy.
I was disappointed to hear that it took Hallmark almost thirty years to issue a public apology, as Hallmark owns the Hyatt.
Thirty years later a memorial is in the works. The Skywalk Memorial Foundation is a non-profit group made up of victims, first-responders and volunteers seeking to build a permanent memorial to the tragedy's victims.
The Kansas City Star is selling a commemorative book about the skywalks disaster and the lessons learned. Royalties from the book benefit the Skywalk Memorial Foundation’s efforts to build a permanent memorial.
Donations are also being accepted through the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. (The link to the foundation is below). I love Hallmark but was saddened by they way they handled the aftermath of the situation. Hallmark did award a great deal of money to victims and their families, but I felt they quickly wanted to sweep the issue under the rug. I understand they have a reputation to uphold, but no public apology for almost thirty years - really?? Hallmark has pledged a donation to the memorial, however, I think they should have constructed a memorial along time ago - at their cost!
The 114 individuals who lost their lives and those who were injured deserve to be honored and remembered. As well does the emergency/medical personnel, firefighters, police officers, public servants and others who so bravely responded to this unprecedented disaster.
